Creative Resistance and Finding Purpose

INTERESTING

Where we place our focus affects the range and depth of our expertise.

As generalists develop range by spreading their focus over many skills, research suggests they are better creative, out-of-the-box thinking, because they see dots from other domains unseen by the specialist.

As specialists develop filling singular skillsets with depth, they are more efficient and can probably better innovate on their given area of expertise.

There're situations where generalists shine and situations where specialists shine.

Where do you stand on the generalist vs specialist argument?

DESIGN

I love using shadows in my work. They increase the overall turnaround time of finishing each illustration, but they're not just for looks. They're a practical tool to add to your tool belt for conveying space and where objects are in relativity to one another.

ENCHANTING

โ€œResistance will tell you anything to keep you from doing your work.โ€

-Stephen Pressfield from "The War of Art"

Resistance is sneaky because it's always present.

It's like the proverbial fish in David Foster Wallace's now famous commencement speech, "This is Water."

If you've never heard it, here's an excerpt:

"There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says:

'Morning, boys. Howโ€™s the water?'

And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes:

'What the hell is water?'"

-David Foster Wallace

Resistance is our water. It's the default. It slows progress.

But it's completely possible to push through to the other side.

ANALOGY

"Passion brings immediate joy.

Values provide lasting meaning."

-Adam Grant

There's something about the fuel a purpose-driven life provides that helps forge our hearts to be more resilient.

If you can somehow melt the two together, then you'll be able to sustain your mission even when the immediate burst of joy has burnt out.
